Agawam is a city located in Hampden County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 28,144. It is the home of the Six Flags New England amusement park, which is a part of the Six Flags corporation.


Geography

Agawam is located at 42°4'19" North, 72°38'39" West (42.071961, _72.644097)1. The town borders West Springfield, Massachusetts to the north, Southwick, Massachusetts to the west, Longmeadow, Massachusetts to the east, and Suffield, Connecticut to the south.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 62.8 km˛ (24.2 mi˛). 60.2 km˛ (23.2 mi˛) of it is land and 2.6 km˛ (1.0 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 4.09% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 28,144 people, 11,260 households, and 7,465 families residing in the city. The population density is 467.6/km˛ (1,210.9/mi˛). There are 11,659 housing units at an average density of 193.7/km˛ (501.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 96.71% White, 0.91% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.98% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 1.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 11,260 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.4% are married couples living together, 9.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% are non-families. 28.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.01.


In the city the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 90.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.9 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $49,390, and the median income for a family is $59,088. Males have a median income of $40,924 versus $30,428 for females. The per capita income for the city is $22,562. 5.6% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.7% of those under the age of 18 and 7.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
