Agdam (Ağdam) is a rayon in southwestern Azerbaijan. Currently a ghost town. At the most the town had over 160.000 with it's own airport. The town was lost to the Armenian forces in July 1993 during the ongoing dispute over the Nagorno-Karabakh area. The Armenians then systematically destroyed the town. The remains has been looted by Armenians living close by, taking materials from the destroyed buildings to restore their own. Although the city itself is completely destroyed, the Muslim cemetery and mosque remain unharmed and untouched by the Armenians. Most of the refugees from Agdam now lives in camps and makeshift cities in the region of Barda and Sumgaït. Image File history File links Azerbaijan-Agdam. ... The area is currently being used as a alleged buffer zone towards the Azeri army. The city is not claimed by Armenians and it is undisputed Azerbaijani territory, and this is acknowledged by Armenia and the Armenians governing Nagorno-Karabakh. This is one of the main reasons why the area has not been inhabited by Armenians themselves. There has been talks of handing over the city back to Azerbaijan, but nothing official has been announced. Armenia allows only a limited number of foreigners to visit the city and photographing is not allowed. UN and OSCE condemed on sevaral occasions the seizure and the town is a controversial subject that is yet to be resolved. Agdam, Azerbaijan, March 2 (Reuters) - Fresh evidence emerged today of a massacre of civilians by Armenian militants in Nagorno-Karabakh, a predominantly Armenian enclave of Azerbaijan.
Agdam hospital was a scene of carnage and terror.
As sickening reports trickled in to the Azerbaijani border town of Agdam, and the bodies piled up in the morgues, there was little doubt that Khojaly and the stark foothills and gullies around it had been the site of the most terrible massacre since the Soviet Union broke apart.
