BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND : DURING THE EARLY 19TH CENTURY SPANISH COLONIAL ERA,THE MUNICIPALITY OF ATIMONAN, TAYABAS (NOW QUEZON PROVINCE) SUFFERED FROM FREQUENT ATTACKS OF PIRATES AND OUTLAWS . A MAN FROM THIS PLACE, MARIANO AGUILAR THOUGHT OF LOOKING FOR A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE AND DWELL WITH HIS FAMILY. HE ASKED A GOOD FRIEND AND DISTANT RELATIVE JUAN SALVADOR TO FIND A PLACE WEST OF THIS MUNICIPALITY TO SETTLE FOR GOOD. THEY WALKED THROUGH THE RIVERSIDE SOUTHWEST BOUND, UNTIL THEY FOUND A VERY SCENIC RIVER WHERE WATERS LOOK LIKE RUNNING ON A LADDER.THEY INITIALLY NAMED IT HAGDAN-HAGDAN (LADDER-LIKE STRUCTURE).THEY MOVED FURTHER WEST UNTIL THEY FOUND A HUGE PLANE WHERE THEY ESTABLISHED THE VILLAGE.THEY BUILT HOUSES FOR THEIR FAMILIES AND INVITED OTHER FRIENDS AND FAMILIES TO SETTLE IN THIS AREA.BEFORE THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY, THIS AREA WAS OFFICIALLY CALLED AGDANGAN AND WAS CLASSIFIED AS A BARIO OF THE NEARBY TOWN UNISAN,TAYABAS.THE POPULATION GREW BIGGER AS A RESULT OF INFLUX OF PEOPLE FROM NEARBY MUNICIPALITIES, AS THE PHILIPPINE NATIONAL RAILWAYS ESTABLISHED A TRAIN STATION HERE, THE SOLE MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION DURING THOSE TIMES.THE FAMILIES OF MARIANO AGUILAR AND JUAN SALVADOR AGAIN TOOK EFFORTS BY CONVINCING THE NATIONAL GOVERNMENT THAT BARIO AGDANGAN CAN STAND INDEPENDENTLY AS A MUNICIPALITY.THE FRUITFUL RESULT OF THIS ENDEAVOR HAPPENED ON APRIL 1, 1939 WHEN AGDANGAN,TAYABAS WAS ESTABLISHED AS A MUNICIPALITY.THE FIRST MUNICIPAL PRESIDENT (MUNICIPAL MAYOR),ROQUE AGUILAR,the eldest son of Mariano Aguilar,WAS APPOINTED TO OFFICE BY PRESIDENT MANUEL L. QUEZON. FIRST MUNICIPAL ELECTION WAS HELD THE FOLLOWING YEAR AND IT WAS WON BY CATALINO Z.AGUILAR AS MAYOR AND CRISPIN SALVADOR AS VICE MAYOR. AGDANGAN UNTIL TODAY IS CLASSIFIED AS 5TH CLASS MUNICIPALITY. PROFESSIONALS AND BUSINESSMEN FROM THIS TINY MUNICIPALITY HAVE BEEN SEEKING BETTER OPPORTUNITIES IN GREATER AREAS LIKE MANILA AND ABROAD.THOUGH SMALL TOWN AS IT SEEMS, THIS MUNICIPALITY RAISED NUMEROUS PERSONALITIES WHO BECAME SUCCESSFUL NOT LIMITED LOCALLY BUT EXTENDED AROUND THE GLOBE.
