The First Film
In the first film, his MIB career starts out when he runs down an alien on foot. When MIB Agent K notices his potential, he recruits him into the MIB. At first, James is suspicious, but he decides to join. He is registered as Agent J. He begins to dislike Kay when he calls him sport, son or slick, but gets used to it. He and Kay's first mission is to stop an alien bug from leaving Earth with a tiny galaxy before the alien owners desintegrate the planet. During the final confrontation with the bug, Kay is swallowed by it in an attempt to get his gun back, leaving Jay to keep him on Earth. When he starts squishing cockroaches, the bug attacks him, but before it can kill him, Kay shoots it from the inside. When Kay requests to be neuralyzed, Jay does it and his new partner is a former medical examiner known as Agent L.
MIB II In the second film, L has been neuralyzed and he has a reputation for neuralyzing all of his partners. When he is sent to get Kay back, his partner is an alien disguised as a pug, Frank. When Kay is de-neuralyzed, he is once again the rookiee.
Trivia - His real name was James Edwards, and used to be a NYPD detective. All records of that were erased when he became Agent J.
