It began as stage Ageo inn of Nakasendo in the Edo period. The railroad station of Ageo was opened in 1883. The town lodging of Ageo and five towns (Ageo, Ageoshimo, Kashiwaza, Kasugayatsu, Yatsu) merged to the new Ageo town in 1889. The five towns of Hirakata, Haraichi, Kamihira, Oishi, and Otani joined in 1955, and Ageo obtained city status in July 15, 1958 with the population more than 37,000. In the second half of the 20th century some factories of metallurgy and automobile were constructed. Housing increased like the suburbs of Tokyo and the cities of the south of the prefecture of Saitama.
