The aggregate score is a used in football (soccer). It refers to the sum of two scorelines when the same two teams play each over two legs (most commonly in a knockout competition). It may also come into use in the league system if two teams are tied on points and goal difference in a critical situation (1st and 2nd or relegation positions). For example, if two teams are playing each other in a two-legged match, and the first result is 1-1 and then 2-1, then the aggregate scoreline will be 3-2. It is used as a more fair way to resolve who is the strongest of the two teams by having them play at home and away. If the aggregate score is tied, then away goals may come into consideration. If away goals are equal, or are not considered, then extra time and possibly a penalty shootout will occur. The away goals rule is a method of breaking ties in football matches contested over two legs in which a winner must be determined. ...
