The Agios Kosmas Olympic Sailing Centre hosted the sailing events at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. The center is located about four miles from downtown Athens along the coast. It was officially opened on August 2, 2004, a few weeks before the Olympics, though test events were conducted at the site in August2002 and 2003. The center has a capacity of 1,600 for the medal ceremonies.
Sailing events will take place in the coastal region of southern Attica almost 35 kilometres from the Olympic village in Athens and 14 kilometres south of the city centre.
While many of Athens' Olympic venues have been dogged by problems, delays and criticisms, sailing's world body says the venue for sailing at this Games is the best ever.
From Hicham El Guerrouj ending his Olympic hoodoo to the triumph of Iranian Hercules Hossein Rezazadeh, these were the defining moments of the Athens Games.
The Centre consists of two outdoor and one indoor pool: one outdoor swimming pool for the swimming and water polo contests with a capacity of 11,000 seats, the new outdoor pool with a capacity of 5,000 seats for synchronised swimming, and the indoor pool of 6,500 seats, where water polo and diving will take place.
The Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Centre currently under construction is located at Schinias, on the northeast part of the Attica region.
The OlympicSailingCentre, located in AgiosKosmas, a coastal area in southern Attica, is the place where the sailing contest will take place.
