Ferncliff Cottage history (432 words)
Ferncliff Cottage was built in the 1850's as a summer home for the highly-respected Canadian author Agnes Maule Machar.
A life-long resident of Kingston, Ontario, Miss Machar made the grand tour after her graduation from Queens' University, and on her return purchased a tract of land in the "Upper Isles" of the St. Lawrence River from a Gananoque farmer who found it too rocky to be useful.
Ferncliff Cottage was designed by Miss Machar herself to resemble the chalets she had seen in Europe, and she spent all her summers there.
