It is an Islamic term used in hadith terminology to mean that the narration has been transmitted by only one narrator at some point in the chain. Therefore such hadiths are not as authoritative as the mutawatir ones which have multiple narrators at each chain in the narration, and therefore multiple chains of narrators, but are still thought to be acceptable. Some Muslim scholars have argued that many ahaad hadith are in fact mutawatir in meaning and are sufficient for use in Islamic doctrine and jurisprudence, although others had argued that acceptance relies on the fulfillment of certain pre-conditions related to the narration.
