Ahmadzai is one of the largest, and probably the largest tribe of Pashtoons. Belonging to the Ghalzai or Ghaljai family of Pashtoons, the father of the tribe Ahmad Aba (father Ahmad) is barried in Paktika province in the southern part of Afghanistan. Ahmadzai tribe originally sprung from the Junoobi province of the country, now divided in three provinces known as Paktya, Paktika and Khost. The tribe lives, apart from the three provinces, in Logar, Kabul, Maidan, Ghazni, Kapisa, Laghman, Nangarhar, Baghlan, Kunduz, Takhar and Balkh provinces. A large part of the tribe lives in the south-eastern side of the Durnad line in Waziristan, semi-controlled by Pakistan. A number of Ahmadzai sub-tribes are Kuchi (nomads). The former president of Afghanistan Dr Najibullah and the former Mujahideen interm government prime minister Eng. Ahmadshah Ahmadzai and the former minister of finance in Hamid Karzai's government professor Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai are among the famous people of the tribe.
