Aikikai Hombu Dojo (合気会 本部道場) is the headquarters of the Aikikai which is an umbrella organisation of various national, as well as smaller, aikido organisations. Although the name strictly refers only to the main training hall (dojo), it is often used by extension to refer to the Aikikai organisation itself. The dojo was founded by Morihei Ueshiba in 1931 under the name Kobukan. The current building, which stands on the same site as the original Kobukan, dates from 1967. Suffolk Aikikai is affiliated with the United States Aikido Federation, under the direction of Yoshimitsu Yamada Shihan, and the AikikaiHombuDojo in Japan, under the guidance of the grandson of O-Sensei and the present leader of the art, Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba.
All the instructors and students at Suffolk Aikikai are encouraged to attend seminars and camps to learn from other senior Aikido Instructors, thereby increasing their knowledge of the Art, and being exposed to different viewpoints and styles in the application of the Art of Aikido.
A hombudojo of a style is considered the administrative and stylstic headquarters or a particular martial arts style or group.
Many traditional dojo follow a prescribed pattern with shomen and various entrances that are used based on student and instructor rank layed out precisely.
Many other artifacts may be displayed throughout the dojo, such as kanban that authorize the school in a style or strategy, and items such as taiko drums or armor (yoroi).
