The name is thought to be of Saxon origin, and mean Lone Tree. Old English (also called Anglo-Saxon) is an early form of the English language that was spoken in parts of what is now England and southern Scotland between the mid-fifth century and the mid-twelfth century. ...


It is best known as the site of the racecourse that since the 19th century has staged the Grand National horse race. During the 1950s and 60s, there was also a 3 mile long motor racing circuit on the site, which used the same grandstands as the horse race, and the British Grand Prix was staged there on five occasions. Aintree was the location for the famous Grand Prix motor race in 1955 when Stirling Moss won his first British Grand Prix , driving a Mercedes. Two years later he became the first British Driver to win a British Grand Prix whilst driving a British car, a Vanwall. The full Grand Prix Circuit was last raced on in 1964, but part of it (the 1.5 mile Club Circuit) is still open, and a limited amount of motor sport continues today in the form of Car Sprints & Track Days and Motorcycle Racing.
