Air Commodore is the fourth most senior rank active in the Royal Air Force today, after the deactivation of Marshal of the Royal Air Force as a substantive rank in peacetime during defence cuts of the 1990s. Air Commodore Paul Webb, who has died aged 89, was one of the three Spitfire pilots who took part in the shooting down of the first German aircraft attacking a target on British soil.
He was the assistant air adviser in Ottawa at the time of the acquisition of Canadian-built Sabre fighters for the RAF, which were ferried across the Atlantic during Operation Becher's Brook, which commenced on December 9 1952 and ended exactly a year later with the delivery of the 400th aircraft.
He was the air adviser to the British High Commissioner in India and one of his final appointments was as the British representative on the Nato Intelligence Committee.
