Air Force Academy is a census-designated place located in El Paso County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 7,526.


Geography

Air Force Academy is located at 38°59'26" North, 104°51'38" West (38.990440, -104.860674)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 26.0 km˛ (10.0 mi˛). 26.0 km˛ (10.0 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,526 people, 1,128 households, and 1,112 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 290.0/km˛ (750.9/mi˛). There are 1,238 housing units at an average density of 47.7/km˛ (123.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 83.55% White, 5.75% African American, 0.80% Native American, 2.83% Asian, 0.25% Pacific Islander, 3.07% from other races, and 3.75% from two or more races. 8.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,128 households out of which 82.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 90.2% are married couples living together, 5.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 1.4% are non-families. 1.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 0.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.60 and the average family size is 3.62.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 49.2% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 2.0% from 45 to 64, and 0.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 21 years. For every 100 females there are 191.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 235.8 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $43,417, and the median income for a family is $43,264. Males have a median income of $7,307 versus $15,464 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $11,088. 2.8% of the population and 3.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.6% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

In January 1950, the Service Academy Board, headed by Dwight D. Eisenhower, then president of Columbia University, concluded that the needs of the Air Force could not be met by the two existing U.S. service academies and that an air force academy should be established.
There are numerous static air- and spacecraft displays on the Academy grounds, including: an F-4, F-15, F-16 and F-105 on the Terrazzo; a B-52 by the North Gate; a T-38 and A-10 at the airfield; an F-100 by the preparatory school; and a Minuteman III in front of the Fieldhouse.
Former Air Force Secretary James Roche was concerned enough that he ordered a revamp of the curriculum to reduce the workload of engineering majors to encourage more cadets to pursue science or engineering studies.

WASHINGTON – An Air Force task force sent to investigate the religious climate at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs found evidence that officers and faculty periodically used their positions to promote their Christian beliefs and failed to accommodate the religious needs of non-Christian cadets.
The task force was appointed May 2 by the acting secretary of the Air Force, Michael L. Dominguez, after more than a year of complaints about religious coercion at the academy.
An academy chaplain, Capt. MeLinda Morton, went public in May with accusations that the religious problem at the academy was "pervasive." She had been part of a team at the academy asked to design a program to promote religious tolerance.
