It started its journey as a primary school opened by an Indian Air Force Officer's war widow Ms. V Kohli in a community centre building located at the Indian Air Force Junior Commissioned Officers Enclave (popularly called N4); and was soon one of the most difficult schools to get admission into, in the area. The new principal Mr. C Chatterjee was from a boarding school background somewhere in eastern India. Soon the school became too large in size and too strong in rolls. The fee structure being biased to the extent of almost free education to Armed Forces Employee Dependents and very high fee charged to civilians notwithstanding; the school is still one of the most sought after ones in the area.

There is another Air Force run school in Cantonment area, which is next to No. 7 Air Force Hospital, Kanpur; but it is not as famous, as it is primarily meant only for primary education of Hospital staff wards.
