The Air Line Pilots Association, International, is the elected bargaining representative for over 64,000 pilots of 41 U.S. and Canadian airlines. ALPA was formed in 1931 and is a member of the AFL-CIO. Its headquarters is in Washington, D.C. The AFL-CIO is the largest labor union federation in the United States. ... Washington, D.C. is the capital city of the United States of America. ...
ALPA believes that the FFDO program provides a great deterrence against future attempted hijackings that is not as dependent upon the number of armed pilots as it is their covertness, training, professionalism, and other important attributes.
ALPA agrees that the primary mission of a commercial aircraft’s cockpit crew is the safe operation of the flight, and that no FFDO traveling in the cockpit of a passenger aircraft should leave its confines to respond to a disturbance in the cabin.
ALPA recommends that, similar to the requirement placed upon employers of military reservists and national guardsmen to grant them leave from their positions to serve in defense of their country, airlines should also be required to grant pilots leave from work to obtain FFDO training.
