Encyclopedia > Air Ministry

The Air Ministry was formerly a department of the United Kingdom Government, established in 1918 with the responsibility of managing the affairs of the (then newly formed) Royal Air Force. In 1964 the Air Ministry merged with the Admiralty and the War Office to form the Ministry of Defence.

The issue was, in fact, decided not in the air, in which element the rival air forces played an important but secondary part, but by slow-moving infantry in the heavy mud of Flanders and the Somme.
