Members of the Royal Family have been flying in the United Kingdom since two Westland Wapitis were delivered to No. 24 Squadron at RAF Northolt in April 1928. The Crown first purchased Challenger jets in 1985. Those used as VIP transports were painted in the red and white livery of the Canadian Armed Forces from the 1970s through to the 1980s. Challenger began flying operations in the mid 1980s with the 414 "Black Knight" Squadron, out of North Bay, Ontario, until July, 1992, when the aircraft were transferred to 434 Squadron in Greenwood, Nova Scotia. 434 Squadron operated 10 Challengers until May, 2000, when the Squadron closed. In 2002, the government, under the direction of Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, purchased two more Challenger just for governmental use. Use of these planes by Ministers of the Crown, especially due to their high cost of maintenance (approx $11,000 per hour[3]), has led to controversy ever since their purchase. Though the minister in question usually explained that the jet's use was necessary due to time constraints or security issues, opposition members of parliament and members of the public continued to voice dissent. The Governor General has also caused issue when using government flights for transport to vacation spots. Governor General Adrienne Clarkson used a chartered twin-prop plane to fly from Ottawa to her cottage in Muskoka, Ontario. The Canadian Forces Air Command's 437 Squadron operates one of five Airbus A310-300s (CC-150 Polaris), in a VIP configuration, known as the Canadian Royal Flight.
