The airport really is the middle of nowhere, and I ended up sleeping in a forest about a mile walk from the airport for 3 nights.
We arrived to the nearby village of Weeze (I think) by train to find that there was still around 6 kilometers to the airport and the "taxibus" had just left.
The airport was pretty far from everything so there were just a few passers-by - someone asking if we knew where the police department was and a few others.
