The Ajuda Library started in the 15th century as the Royal Library and was installed in the west turret of the Ribeira Palace after the 16th century.
Afterwards, the Library was transferred to the houses adjacent to the Real Barraca (Royal Hut) in Ajuda and in 1811, after the French invasions, it was transferred again to Rio de Janeiro, originating there today's National Library.
The earliest area of the Library has five rooms, three of which are open to visitors; stand out for their dimensions, the bookcases and galleries' height and historical furniture.
