Akademisk Boldklub or AB is a Danish football club from Copenhagen. It was formed in 1889 by a group of academics. To play for the club it was a requirement to be a university student. The club was a dominant factor in early Danish football and won the Danish championship (introduced 1913) in 1919 and 1921, the club has won the championship on 9 occasions (1919, 1921, 1937, 1943, 1945, 1947, 1951, 1952 and 1967). One of the most renown players of the club, Harald Bohr is the brother of the famous Niels Bohr. Other notorious footballers from the AB history includes Knud Lundberg who played for the Danish national team in not one, but three sports (basketball, handball and football), and Karl Aage Hansen, who scored 17 goals in 22 matches for the national team. Both Lundberg and Hansen played for the club in it's heyday, from the end of the world war to the mid-fifties (four championships within ten years). Since the 70's and especially after the introduction of professional football (in the 80's) the club has had a difficult time outside the top of Danish football. The exception being the late 90's - in 1996 the club got promoted to the top division, and enjoyed a couple of years with success, reaching a 3rd place finish in both 1999 and 2000. Today the club plays on the second highest level in Denmark. Image File history File links AkademiskBoldklub. ...
