Story

Akazukin Chacha is the story of a young magical girl (Mahō Shōjo) named Chacha. She lives with her guardian, Seravi, in a cottage on Mochi-mochi mountain. Seravi is her teacher and also the fictional world's greatest magician. Chacha is clumsy in casting her spells because, throughout the anime, when she summons something, it often turns out to be something that she didn't mean to cast, for example, she summoned spiders (kumo) instead of a cloud (also kumo). At times in the anime when she and her friends are in trouble, however, her spells do work. Living on the same mountain is a boy gifted with enormous strength named Riiya. It is described that Riiya came from a family of werewolves who can instantly change into a wolf whenever they want. Quite far from Mochi-mochi mountain lies Urizuri mountain. Dorothy, also a well known magician in her land, lives in a castle on Urizuri mountain. Living with her is Shiine, her student. Shiine is adept when it comes to casting spells. He is a young wizard and most of his knowledge about magic was taught to him by Dorothy. The first 2 seasons were originally created by the anime team. Most of the stories in season 3 are based on the manga.

Daimaou in anime

Daimaou, the story's antagonist, is a devil who wishes to conquer the land and devastate it. A long time ago, Daimaou attacked the land's castle and turned the King and Queen to stone statues. The father of the King, who is Seravi's teacher, sacrificed himself in order to trap Daimaou inside the castle. He forms a barrier of crystals, which forms a shield around the castle and trapped Daimaou inside. Daimaou has to send his minions to do his nasty works for him.

Part One (Season 1)

In the beginning of the story, when Chacha was about to begin school, Seravi gave her a pendant called the Princess Medallion and gave the magical bracelet and ring to Riiya and Shiine respectively. The princess medallion enables Chacha to transform into a beautiful warrior-type lady, who can defeat Daimaou's minions. She shouts the phrase "Let Love, Courage and Hope -- Magical Princess Holy Up!" (Magical Princess is the name of the princess). The transformation will only work if the 3 of them get together.

Throughout the story, Chacha, Shiine and Riiya attend Urara School, named after their principal Urara. The three are in class banana with their teacher named Rascal who wields a whip, looks strict, but is actually very kind. On the same class is Kurozukin (black hooded) Yakko and Orin. Yakko admires Seravi deeply and even called him a prince. Orin is a ninja of the momonga clan and is good at concealing herself. Orin is probably the most truthful character in the story, she develops a crush on Shiine when they first met. Later a mermaid called Marin tags along and her love interest is Riiya. Binomial name Pteromys momonga Temminck, 1844 The Japanese dwarf flying squirrel (Pteromys momonga, Japanese: モモンガ: momonga) is a type of flying squirrel. ... For other uses, see Mermaid (disambiguation). ...

Part Two (Season 2)

In the second season, when Chacha's weapon, the Beauty Serene Arrow, is unable to beat one of Daimaou's minions, the trio began to search for another much more powerful weapon which is called the Phoenix Sword.Chacha discovers that her parents are the King and Queen of their land. Encountering many obstacles in finding the Phoenix Sword they succeeded.

Also during this part of the story the quest for the Bird Shield, the third weapon that the magical princess must acquire in order to defeat Daimaou's minions is initiated. At the end of this story arc, Daimaou is defeated. Chacha, Shiine, Riiya, Orin, Yakko, Marin, Dorothy and Seravi get together and help each other inside the castle. They are called the 8 paladins of love, courage and hope. After Daimaou was defeated, the castle changes back to its original shape and color.

Part Three (Season 3)

In Season three, after Daimaou was defeated, a magical artifact which is called the King's seal is being stolen by one of Daimaou's minions. Whoever possess the King's seal can make the world good or evil. The Magical Princess fought the enemy and by accident, they had broken the barrier between their land and the other side. Monsters crawled out of the hole and started devastating their land. Seravi said that in order to seal the broken barrier again, they must use things that are from Gods or Goddess. The Pendant, Bracelet and Ring are given to them by Queen Joan, now a Goddess, so they sacrificed the 3 items to save the world. Chacha now can't change into Magical Princess Holy Up. But her family gave her 3 magical items, the magical brooch, compact and the Crescent Aurora Bracelet which whenever she is in trouble she calls up a boomerang which in turn will bring her the items that can solve her problems. At the end of the story, Seravi settled and intended to be married with his childhood classmate and love interest, Dorothy.

OVA

The OVA series follows the effort of the elite Momiji School as they try to find out why the greatest witches and wizards in the world come from Urara School. A psionic named Popy is sent to infiltrate the school, but things will not prove too easy when Chacha and friends try to befriend Popy instead.

Differences between the manga and anime

The manga was more light-hearted than the anime, following a more comedic route than its animated sister. Like many manga and their anime adaptions (and vice versa) there were a number of differences.

  • The whole "Magic Princess" story arcs are created by the anime staff and are not in the manga.
  • Instead of whisking Chacha out of the castle just before it falls as in the anime, Seravi encounters Chacha wrapped in a cocoon on a tree.
  • Shiine's father Access, while having the same appearance as his anime counterpart, is nowhere near the ominous presence he was in the anime. In fact, he was fairly goofy. In one incident, an attempt to help Shiine catch Chacha's eye backfired spectacularly, leaving him trapped at the top of a tree surrounded by irate women (who thought he was peeping on them in the bath).
  • The reasons for Shiine's apprenticeship to Dorothy differ. In the anime, Access delivers the infant Shiine to Dorothy to protect him from Daimaou. In the manga, Shiine's mother sends Shiine to Dorothy to protect him from her husband (who apparently hugged Shiine so hard his mother was afraid he'd accidentally suffocate him).
  • Daimaou in the manga was far more agreeable than his anime version. He is shown in the appearance of a rock & roll singer and is a great Manga fan(he owns 150,000 Manga books). He is the father of Heihachi and is later revealed to be the birth father of Seravi(this is only in the Manga). In the concluding chapters of the manga, he takes in a despondent Riiya (who previously received such a verbal lashing from Chacha he thought she no longer loved him). He teaches Riiya all sorts of seduction techniques he can use to win Chacha back before sending him home.

Filipino-English Version Facts

This section points out the various errors, changes, etc. heard in the English version aired on Cartoon Network Asia in 1998.

  • Strangely, Marin was dubbed with a southern accent.
  • Orin's name is changed to "Suzu".
  • Due to a lack of editing tools (or utilization of), Cha Cha would announce the episode titles followed by a short giggle.
  • Marin's magical chant is changed to "Marin's Mystical Magic".
  • Holy Up's attacks and weapons were renamed from "Beauty Serene Arrow" to "Magical Sylene Arrow" and "Bird Shield" to "Band Shield".
