Giving the military the right to vote (518 words)
House of Representatives (DPR) speaker Akbar Tanjung says members of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) and National Police must be given the right to vote in general elections once the security forces are removed from politics.
Tanjung, who is also chairman of Golkar Party, said Tuesday (11/6/02) the military/police would lose their seats in the DPR by 2004 and must therefore be given the right to vote.
Tanjung's comments come as the House debates a series of political bills introduced by the government in preparation for the next general election in June 2004.
UDHR - News Item (1293 words)
Akbar Tanjung may be free, but a Supreme Court judge says he took part in a corrupt practice, writes Matthew Moore.
Mr Akbar's success in finally clearing his name in the courts opens the way for him to be nominated as the presidential candidate for the Golkar Party of former president Soeharto.
The five judges ruled that as a minister in the Habibie cabinet in 1999, Akbar Tanjung could not be held responsible for the disappearance of nearly $7 million, which was intended as aid for the poor.
