The current Aker Finnyards is a descendant of two different shipyard companies. Wärtsilä operated the shipyards of Helsinki and Turku since the 1970's. Wärtsilä's shipbuilding division went bankrupt in 1989, and Masa-Yards was established to operate Wärtsilä's former shipyards. In the mis-90's Kvaerner purchased Masa-Yards and Kvaerner Masa-Yards was born. Similarly the Rauma Shipyard was purchased by Kvaerner and became Aker Finnyards.
