Akiachak is a census-designated place located in Bethel Census Area, Alaska. As of the 2000 census, the population of the CDP is 585.


Geography

Akiachak is located at 60°53'58" North, 161°24'48" West (60.899547, _161.413381)1.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 17.5 km˛ (6.8 mi˛). 17.5 km˛ (6.8 mi˛) of it is land and 0.15% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 585 people, 133 households, and 111 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 33.4/km˛ (86.5/mi˛). There are 150 housing units at an average density of 8.6/km˛ (22.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 3.42% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 92.31% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 4.27% from two or more races. 1.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 133 households out of which 63.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% are married couples living together, 15.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 15.8% are non-families. 14.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.40 and the average family size is 4.89.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 44.4% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 14.5% from 45 to 64, and 5.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 22 years. For every 100 females there are 121.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 118.1 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $35,833, and the median income for a family is $35,288. Males have a median income of $31,667 versus $18,750 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $8,321. 21.2% of the population and 16.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.7% of those under the age of 18 and 34.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
