Akins is a census-designated place located in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 449.


Geography

Akins is located at 35°30'27" North, 94°40'7" West (35.507392, _94.668642)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 35.1 km² (13.6 mi²). 35.1 km² (13.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 449 people, 164 households, and 133 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 12.8/km² (33.1/mi²). There are 169 housing units at an average density of 4.8/km² (12.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 70.16% White, 1.56% African American, 15.81% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 12.25% from two or more races. 1.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 164 households out of which 40.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.1% are married couples living together, 6.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 18.9% are non-families. 15.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.05.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 104.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.1 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $28,750, and the median income for a family is $27,143. Males have a median income of $22,083 versus $16,750 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $11,996. 20.6% of the population and 18.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.6% of those under the age of 18 and 12.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Floyd was born in rural Georgia on February 3, 1904.
