Akvarium is a, Russian rock-group, the central in the Russian rock of 1970s-1990s. Musicians of the group worked with Sergei Kuryokhin, Alexei Khvostenko, Kino, DDT, Alisa, to name only a few.
The Russian group Akvarium (English translation - Aquarium) is led by singer/songwriter/guitarist Boris Grebenshikov, who has issued over 70 albums either on his own or as a member of Akvarium since the '70s.
Akvarium has been known to tackle a variety of different musical styles, including ballads, reggae, and even rock.
Having issued twenty releases since their formation in 1981, it is Akvarium's 1991 release, the Russian Album, which is often considered to be their finest.
In the early 1980s, Akvarium was exciting and innovative, exploring new horizons for music that few people in Russia thought were possible.
Influenced by the Russian literature of absurd, Akvarium managed to move on from the hippy pomposity of Russian rock at the time - and developed very quickly, incorporating punk, new wave and reggae, styles which were then largely unknown and neglected in Russia, into their work.
Gakkel finally quit the band in 1988 to reappear only at "Akvarium's Last Concert" in 1991 and the 25th anniversary concerts in 1995, while Romanov remained with the group until it was disbanded by Grebenshchikov, who went on to pursue solo activities, only to rename his BG Band Akvarium in 1992.
