The AlKufrah region is bounded roughly by latitude 21° and 26° north and longitude 21° and 24° east and extends generally northwest-southeast for 523 km (325 mi).
The largest village in the area is Al Jawf, but the most important is At Tāj, the holy city of the Sanusi (or Senussi) Muslim sect and the residence of its leaders.
