Progress Energy Park (Full name Progress Energy Park at Al Lang Field) is a 7,227 seat baseballstadium located on the downtownSt. Petersburg, Florida waterfront, it is currently the spring training facility of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Originally built in 1922 as the St. Petersburg Athletic Park, the venue was the spring training site of the Boston Braves (now the Atlanta Braves) until 1937. When the Braves left, the St. Louis Cardinals came in and except for 2 years during World War II, trained there through the 1997 season. During this time, in 1976, the stadium was rebuilt and renamed Al Lang Field. AlLangField is located right on the waterfront in downtown St. Petersburg -- and we mean right on the waterfront.
AlLangField used to be the home of the St. Petersburg Devil Rays (Class A; Florida State League), but when MLB realigned the minor leagues at the end of the 2000 season, two Florida State League teams were eliminated.
The AlLang moniker dates from the Cardinals years -- 1947, to be exact -- and comes from the original AlLang, St. Petersburg's local "father of baseball." When the Cardinals left, the Devil Rays became the first MLB team to train in its home town since the 1919 St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Athletics.
