Al MacNeil (b. November 17, 1935 in Sydney, Nova Scotia) played parts of eleven seasons as a rugged defenseman with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Black Hawks, New York Rangers and Pittsburg Penguins. Upon retiring as a player Al turned to coaching, where he won three Calder Cup Championships in six years with the American Hockey LeagueNova Scotia Voyageurs. In 1971 Al was a mid season replacement as Head Coach for the National Hockey LeagueMontreal Canadiens and guided the team a Stanley Cup championship. During the '71 playoffs, he got into several incidents with Henri Richard, Henri was a highly admired and respected player on the team, so MacNeil stepped down as coach, but stayed within the Canadiens organization. In 1979, he took over the Atlanta Flames, just before the team moved to Calgary. He would last three seasons as head coach of the Calgary Flames before moving into a number of management related capacities within the Flames organization. AlMacNeil won his first game as interim coach for Calgary when the Flames got goals from Craig Conroy and Oleg Saprykin in a 2-1 victory over the Avalanche on Tuesday night.
MacNeil, who played for five teams in 10 NHL seasons during the 1960s, is in his 23rd year with the organization.
MacNeil won the Stanley Cup as Montreal's coach in 1971, his first in the league, and has a 134-108-53 record in four seasons.
