Alamo is a town located in Crockett County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,392. It is the county seat of Crockett County6.


Geography

Alamo is located at 35°47'3" North, 89°6'57" West (35.784201, _89.115729)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.6 km˛ (2.2 mi˛). 5.6 km˛ (2.2 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,392 people, 945 households, and 605 families residing in the town. The population density is 429.6/km˛ (1,112.5/mi˛). There are 1,076 housing units at an average density of 193.2/km˛ (500.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 76.25% White, 21.32% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.42% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 2.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 945 households out of which 28.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.0% are married couples living together, 16.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.9% are non-families. 33.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.98.


In the town the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 81.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.5 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $25,750, and the median income for a family is $38,295. Males have a median income of $26,167 versus $21,650 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,146. 20.5% of the population and 16.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.9% of those under the age of 18 and 23.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

After its later abandonment as a mission, it was used as a fortress in the 19th century and was the scene of several military actions, including most notably the 1836 Battle of the Alamo, one of the pivotal battles between the forces of the Republic of Texas and Mexico during the Texas Revolution.
