AlanGorrie wrote himself a series of cheques of amounts up to £40,000 in just over a year-and-a-half while working as an accounts clerk at the pensions firm's head office in Edinburgh.
After Gorrie had pleaded guilty to the charge, Sheriff Craik said: "This is a vast amount of money and whether it is repaid or not, the court must take a serious view...He was using the money for not only financial necessities, but three cars and holidays."
He concluded that a jail sentence was inevitable and told Gorrie: "Quite clearly, for you, this is a tragic situation, but it is a situation you landed yourself in.
