Alba is a town located in Texas. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 430.

Alba is located at 32°47'31" North, 95°38'4" West (32.792069, -95.634532)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.9 km˛ (1.1 mi˛). None of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 430 people, 196 households, and 118 families residing in the town. The population density is 149.6/km˛ (387.8/mi˛). There are 232 housing units at an average density of 80.7/km˛ (209.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 98.60% White, 0.47% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 1.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 196 households out of which 23.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.9% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% are non-families. 35.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.19 and the average family size is 2.85.


In the town the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 19.8% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 22.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 84.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 76.2 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $23,438, and the median income for a family is $29,464. Males have a median income of $28,125 versus $25,278 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,675. 16.1% of the population and 11.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.4% of those under the age of 18 and 16.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Alba, also known as Simpkins Prairie and Albia, is at the intersection of U.S. Highway 69 and Farm Road 17, south of Lake Fork Reservoir and ten miles west of Quitman on the western border of Wood County.
Although the Alba oilfield was discovered by F. Jackson just south of the community in 1948, by 1952 the population had fallen to 545.
Alba had 408 residents in the late 1960s, 676 residents and ten businesses in 1980, and 594 residents and fifteen businesses in 1988.
