Encyclopedia > Albanian Socialist Party

The Socialist Party of Albania (Albanian: Partia Socialiste e Shqipėrisė) is the current ruling political party of Albania. It currently has 73 MPs in the Albanian parliament out of a total of 140, giving it a very slim majority.


It is the legal successor to the ruling Communist Party of Albania party, the Albanian Labor Party. It is a member of the Socialist International, and is currently led by Albanian Prime Minister, Fatos Nano.

The Socialist Party was favored to win early elections since it was the largest party in the country (drawing especially on the support from pensioners and the unemployed), and since other parties remained weak and divided.
The Socialist Party bitterly contested the legality of that law, as well as changes to the election law that increased the share of directly elected seats in parliament relative to seats assigned by party proportions.
Berisha agreed to a partial re-run of the elections in 17 districts.
