Albany is a city located in Clinton County, Kentucky. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,220. It is the county seat of Clinton County6.


Geography

Albany is located at 36°41'36" North, 85°8'7" West (36.693280, _85.135286)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.8 km˛ (3.4 mi˛). 8.8 km˛ (3.4 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,220 people, 1,018 households, and 561 families residing in the city. The population density is 252.1/km˛ (653.0/mi˛). There are 1,165 housing units at an average density of 132.3/km˛ (342.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 98.38% White, 0.05% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.50% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 3.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,018 households out of which 25.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.5% are married couples living together, 14.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.8% are non-families. 41.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.12 and the average family size is 2.86.


In the city the population is spread out with 21.5% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 80.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.0 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $14,558, and the median income for a family is $22,652. Males have a median income of $21,389 versus $16,685 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,919. 35.9% of the population and 28.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 49.8% of those under the age of 18 and 36.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
