To the S. of the town is a conspicuous monument, 27 ft. high, in the form of a rectangular pillar, resembling a tomb; but as there is no trace of a door to a sepulchral chamber it may be.
In the town itself there are no Roman remains; but there is a good Gothic cathedral in brick, and an interesting octagonal baptistery, attributed to the 8th or gth century, the arches being supported by ancient columns, and the vaulting decorated with mosaics.
The heart of the historic center is Piazza San Michele, on which the cathedral stands: structures from the eleventh century survive in the lower part of the façade and from the thirteenth century in the upper part.
A visit to the museums of Albenga also provides an opportunity explore the splendid buildings in which they are housed: the Palazzo Vecchio and the decorated rooms of Palazzo Peloso Cepolla, formerly the archbishopâs palace.
Nowadays the Albenga plain is used chiefly for the growing of potted plants, herbs and high-value early produce, using advanced farming methods supported by the Centre for Agricultural Experimentation and Assistance of the Savona Chamber of Commerce.
