Albert Margai (10 October, 1910-1990) followed his brother Milton Margai as Prime Minister of Sierra Leone. Albert Margai served from the time of his brother's death in 1964 until 1967, when he was replaced by Siaka Stevens. He served as finance minister in Milton's government after 1962, where he also held positions alternatively in Education, Agriculture, and Natural Resources. He was born in Gbangbatoke, in what is now the Moyamba District, although he was raised largely in Freetown. He studied law at the Inner Temple Inns of Court where he qualified in 1948. Margai was a founding member of the Sierra Leone National Party, which formed in 1949 to advocate and aid in the transition to independence for the country. However, in the years leading up to independence, Margai was allied more closely to Siaka Stevens than to his brother, and took leadership of the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) in 1957, but stepped down to form the People's National Party with Stevens. A major point of contention between the two groups involved the degree of involvement of traditional chiefs and traditional rules in the modern state. In fact, Margai openly asked traditional rulers to stay out of politics. 1910 was a common year starting on Saturday (see link for calendar). ...

Margai was highly criticized during his reign. He had a penchant for extravagant pageantry, and was accused of corruption and of a policy of affirmative action in favor of the Mende tribe. In elections on 17 May, 1967, Margai was voted out in favor of Siaka Stevens, who was then a candidate of the All Peoples Congress. After a brief period of unrest related to the transition, Stevens took office in 1968.
