Electrification plebiscite

The electrification plebiscite was the first of four plebiscites conducted province-wide in Alberta's history. The ballot was not a traditional yes/no question, but presented two options on electricity regulation, asking if the province should create a Crown corporation to manage electricity, or leave the electricity industry unregulated. In Commonwealth countries a Crown corporation is a state-controlled company or enterprise (a public corporation). ...


The result shows how divided the province was on the issue, with a plurality of only 151 votes in favour of leaving the province deregulated.

Alberta was the largest “colony” of its kind in Canada, and its Ukrainian character was reflected in place-names such as Zhoda, Myrnam, Buczacz, Borshchiw, New Kiew, and so forth.
In 1959 Ukrainian was allowed as a subject of instruction in Alberta’s secondary schools, and in 1974 Ukrainian-English bilingual education was re-established at the primary level (and later extended to the intermediate and secondary levels).

Alberta became one of the most impoverished areas of Canada during the 1930s, and social welfare programs were rapidly expanded at this time to help the poor and the unemployed of the province.
