He went to primary school in his native city whereas he went to Caracas secondary school, where he graduated in 1927. He went to college at [[Central University of Venezuela, where he received the lawyer degree and later doctor in political sciences in 1935. Poet in the plains traditions, he publishes his first volume of verses, Música de Cuatro, in 1928.
