Albion is a town located in Orleans County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 8,042.


The Town of Albion was created in 1875 by the division of the Town of Barre and contains part of the Village of Albion, the county seat. The town was named after the village.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 65.7 km˛ (25.4 mi˛). 65.3 km˛ (25.2 mi˛) of it is land and 0.3 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.47% water.


The Erie Canal passes through the town.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,042 people, 2,403 households, and 1,597 families residing in the town. The population density is 123.1/km˛ (318.8/mi˛). There are 2,626 housing units at an average density of 40.2/km˛ (104.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 76.86% White, 16.03% Black or African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 4.29% from other races, and 1.48% from two or more races. 8.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,403 households out of which 36.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% are married couples living together, 14.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% are non-families. 27.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.20.


In the town the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 36.1% from 25 to 44, 17.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 138.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 148.7 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $34,028, and the median income for a family is $37,188. Males have a median income of $31,960 versus $23,500 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,890. 14.4% of the population and 12.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.1% of those under the age of 18 and 6.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
