History

Following the fall of the Roman Empire, Emnetzur, fifth of the many sons of Kubrat, with his horde of ethnic Bulgars, fled hostilities in Pannonia, and crossed the Alps into Italy. Allied with the Lombards, they first settled near Ravenna, Italy. The group rode south a few decades later into the regions of Campania, and Molise. In 667 AD they entered into an agreement with Romuald I of Benevento, to provide military service to him in exchange for using the territory to raise livestock. The immigration resulted in a large Bulgarian integration with the local population. Their language, dress and cuisine spread to influence the customs of Southern Italy.


Note

The tribal leader Alcek in Italian is referred to as Alzecone ('Top Alcek'). Whether historians are speaking about Emnetzur himself, or one of his successors is a matter for debate.
