Encyclopedia > Aldford

Aldford is a village in the county of Cheshire, south of Chester. It was constructed as a designed village in the middle of the 19th century by Sir Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster, in almost rectangular form.


Eaton Hall and the Roman road Watling Street are outside the village.

The fee of Aldford was held under the Earl of Chester by Richard de Aldford in the reign of King John (1199-1216).

Aldford Castle is an impressive 12th century stone motte and bailey fortress, founded by Richard de Aldford.
The large motte is encased by a wide wet ditch and stands within the remaining wide ramparts and wet ditches of a triangular bailey.
Aldford Castle is located in the village centre, off Church Lane.
