Alec Empire Empire started making punk music in the early 1980s. When he discovered techno, he immediately developed an affinity for it and abandoned punk at once, though some elements of it were transplanted into his new style of music-making. When he saw after a few years that most of his friends were only concerned with partying all night and did not care about events in the world (which is something that Empire expected his friends to do since they lived in a separated Berlin), his music, which always had an anarchism-influenced edge to it, began to develop in a new way dubbed digital hardcore. When they received a contract offer from a record company that gave them a high advance payment, they accepted it. After their relationship with the record company went sour, using the advance money, Alec Empire set up Digital Hardcore Recordings, which has, to date, released a number of records. At the same time, Alec Empire recorded several abstract solo records under the label Mille Plateaux. After the death of Carl Crack by overdose, Atari Teenage Riot was put on hold and later disbanded in 2000. Alec Empire went solo, and Hanin started her own label, Fatal Records. After much solo work on Mille Plateaux and Digital Hardcore Recordings (including the infamous illegal bootleg Alec Empire Vs. Elvis Presley album in 1999) the Alec Empire 'band' started in 2001, releasing his long awaited Intelligence and Sacrifice album; enlisted on synths was former ATR member Nic Endo, and on live guitars future DHR sign-up Robbie Furze. The album recieved largely positive reviews from, and after playing the Fuji Rock Festival with all-star line-up on instruments, Alec released an album composed of his live work with Merzbow, later in the year.
