Aledo is a city located in Mercer County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,613. It is the county seat of Mercer County6.


Geography

Aledo is located at 41°12'1" North, 90°44'60" West (41.200172, _90.749956)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.9 km˛ (2.3 mi˛). 5.8 km˛ (2.2 mi˛) of it is land and 0.44% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,613 people, 1,506 households, and 1,016 families residing in the city. The population density is 622.8/km˛ (1,611.2/mi˛). There are 1,588 housing units at an average density of 273.7/km˛ (708.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 98.34% White, 0.44% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 0.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,506 households out of which 29.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.5% are non-families. 29.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.87.


In the city the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 86.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.8 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $33,449, and the median income for a family is $41,934. Males have a median income of $35,233 versus $21,271 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,498. 8.1% of the population and 7.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.5% of those under the age of 18 and 9.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
