In Boston, Cora was originally intended to provide a cushion for shortstop Edgar Rentería. However, with the trade of Renteria to the Atlanta Braves, Cora was being eyed to take the position of starting shortstop. Shortly afterward, the Red Sox aquired Alex Gonzalez to start. Although Gonzalez recieves more attention, Cora is very simaler defensively and offensively. Also, he is a favorite of the Red Sox coaching staff for his heads-up play and knowledge of the game.
