Alexander Bryan Johnson (1786-1867) was a notable philosopher and banker. Born in Gosport, England, at age 16 he emigrated to the USA. His work was little recognised in his own time, and this remained the case for nearly a century after his death. His work can now be seen to have anticipated the thrust of logical positivism and theories of modern linguistics. Johnson was born in Stonewall, Texas on August 27, 1908 in a small farmhouse in a poor area on the Pedernales River.
Johnson was known among his colleagues for his highly successful "courtships" of older senators, especially Senator Richard Russell, patrician leader of the Conservative coalition and arguably the most powerful man in the Senate.
Johnson died at 4:33 PM on January 22, 1973 from a third heart attack at his ranch, at the age of 64.

Alexander Bryan Johnson 1786–1867, American philosopher and semanticist, b.
He emigrated (1801) to the United States and eventually became a wealthy banker in Utica, N.Y. Johnson anticipated many of the concerns of logical positivism and modern linguistic philosophy, but his views were ignored in his lifetime and were lost sight of for nearly a century.
He held that a statement meant, for a speaker, whatever evidence he adduced or could adduce in its support: Language does not explain the world, rather the world explains language.
