Alexander Herrmann (18431896) was a German magician, better known as Herrmann the Great. Alexander was born to Carl Herrmann, a physician who occasionally performed throughout Europe as a conjuror. Aleaxander joined his brother's stage show at the age of eight and the brothers toured the world together. Eventually they would go their separate ways, Carl returning to Europe and Alexander to America where he became a naturalized citizen in 1876. Throughout the 1870s and 1880s, Alexander and his wife Adelaide (née Scarcez; 18541932) performed together in elaborate stage shows. The pair adapted Robert Houdin's Ariel Suspension routine and performed their own version of the bullet catch. ... When Herrmann died from heart failure in 1896, Adelaide continued performing her husbands illusions. She was joined by Alexander's nephew, Leon Herrmann (18671909). Alexander's father Samuel, a practicing German physician, was the first to enjoy magic as a hobby.
Alexander, who was 27 years younger than his brother Carl, also became a magician and was finally announced as Carl's successor-to-be in New York in 1869.
Amazingly, the Herrmann name continued to thrive as Alexander's wife Adelaide carried on with the performing tradition and soon became the first woman to win notable fame as a magician.
