Park keepers were initially not keen on thousands of visitors tramping over their lawns, the Head Keeper at Philips describing them as "low elements", and in 1859 sixty cast iron "Keep off the Grass" signs were purchased - keepers were issued with caps, badges and whistles, and enforced the rule strictly.
A prominent fixture in the park, and somewhat of a local mystery, is the huge boulder (weighing in at 13 tons), which was uncovered during excavations by a building contractor on the local estate and was presented to the park as an object of curiosity.
Crumpsall Park is located on Ash Tree Road in Crumpsall in a densely populated area and is a focal point for the community on land that was once earmarked as a cemetery, before the idea was abandoned in favour of parkland.
