Alexandria has two elementary schools, two high schools (Glengarry District High School and École secondaire Le Relais) and a park. The town has a small private aerodrome just northeast of town where there is a skydiving operation. A fly-in breakfast is held there each summer.

Alexandria was settled in 1794 by forty families who emigrated with Alexander MacLeod and, subsequently, blended with the French culture of the area to the east.
