Alexandria Bay is a village located in Jefferson County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,088.

Geography

The village is located on the south bank of the St. Lawrence River.

Alexandria Bay is located at 44°20'9" North, 75°54'53" West (44.335897, -75.914718)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.0 km² (1.5 mi²). 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is land and 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 51.63% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 1,088 people, 482 households, and 270 families residing in the village. The population density is 567.7/km² (1,473.9/mi²). There are 624 housing units at an average density of 325.6/km² (845.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 99.08% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 0.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 482 households out of which 24.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.4% are married couples living together, 14.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.8% are non-families. 38.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.12 and the average family size is 2.81.

In the village the population is spread out with 20.3% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 23.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 80.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.9 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $29,338, and the median income for a family is $36,979. Males have a median income of $31,250 versus $21,429 for females. The per capita income for the village is $16,875. 13.5% of the population and 11.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.3% of those under the age of 18 and 18.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
